World War III, World War 3, WWIII, WW3, or the Third World War are the names given to a hypothetical global conflict subsequent to World War One and World War II (referred to simply as "The Great War").

Before the beginning of World War II in 1939, World War I (1914–1918) was believed to have been "the war to end all wars". It was popularly believed that never again could there possibly be a global conflict of such magnitude. The planet simmered for a while, until Adolf Hitler lit the fuse by invading Poland. Igniting the simmering cauldron of political ambitions.

After WWII we had the Cold War, a game of nuclear missile chess, where each side tried to outdo the other with more missiles and submarines and counters to countermeasure. And that brings us to today.

In any Second Strike scenario, it is a prerequisite that the defending state is able to launch a retaliatory attack. Presumably with sufficient numbers of citizens and politicians surviving the devastation to run their country after a preemptive surprise First Strike.

After WWII it should have been made illegal to develop nuclear bombs and missiles, with hard no-excuse destruction of any nation that violated what would turn out to be a nightmare situation where the planet is now vulnerable to complete destruction. That would have prevented Russia, and any other country breaking the rules, from developing ICBMs, etc. Since, only the US had nuclear technology.

Unfortunately, subsequent Presidents were too busy promising prosperity to win votes, to undertake such preventative measures. And in any event, the military were more than happy with the in situ fraudulent procurement arrangements to continue to profit from making conventional weapons of war, submarines, aircraft carriers and of course building nuclear missiles, to want to rock that boat.

Hence, we end up with nuclear missiles on submarines at sea, except in the case of Pakistan, who have hardened launch silos. And China, who are building a network of underground bunker at strategic locations.

SWITZERLAND

Switzerland built an extensive network of fallout shelters, not only through extra hardening of government buildings such as schools, but also through a building regulation requiring nuclear shelters in residential buildings since the 1960s (the first legal basis in this sense dates from 4 October 1963). Later, the law ensured that all residential buildings built after 1978 contained a nuclear shelter able to withstand a blast from a 12-megaton explosion at a distance of 700 metres. The Federal Law on the Protection of the Population and Civil Protection still requires that every inhabitant should have a place in a shelter close to where they live.

The Swiss authorities maintained large communal shelters (such as the Sonnenberg Tunnel until 2006) stocked with over four months of food and fuel. The reference Nuclear War Survival Skills declared that, as of 1986, "Switzerland has the best civil defense system, one that already includes blast shelters for over 85% of all its citizens." As of 2006, there were about 300,000 shelters built in private residences, institutions and hospitals, as well as 5,100 public shelters for a total of 8.6 million places, a level of coverage equal to 114% of the population.

FINLAND

HELSINKI, Aug 29 2023 (Reuters) - Finland has finished inventorying its existing bomb shelters in a government effort prompted by neighbouring Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, and found it has 50,500 of them, its interior ministry said.

Finland joined the NATO military alliance in April in a historic security policy U-turn but it had kept preparing for the possibility of a conflict with Russia for decades, after fighting back an invasion attempt by the Soviet Union during WW2.

The wary Nordic country made the construction of emergency shelters mandatory under apartment blocks and office buildings as early as in the 1950s, which explains their current high number.

The government's census concluded that the Nordic nation of 5.5 million people has some 50,500 bomb shelters that can fit 4.8 million inhabitants in them in case of an emergency or an attack, the ministry said. It also found that 91% of the shelters are robust enough to sustain an attack conducted with conventional weapons, while 83% are equipped to also provide shelter from gas emissions or nuclear emergencies.

In the early days of World War II, the Soviet Union invaded Finland in a campaign now known as the Winter War. Soviet losses far exceeded Finland's, but in the end the Soviet Union simply had too many soldiers for Finland to effectively defend against, and a peace treaty was signed that ceded 12% of Finland's land area to the Soviet Union, most of which Russia still controls today.

The people of Finland retained the scars of this war. Today, Finland shares the longest land border with Russia of any European Union nation, spanning more than 1,300km (800 miles). While they've generally maintained a stance of neutrality since WWII, they've also fostered a sense of preparedness.

As such, these Finnish nuclear bunkers were first constructed during the 1960s during the tense and still-escalating days of the Cold War, in which its near neighbor was a primary player. Construction continues today, with Finnish law requiring that buildings over a certain size must contain a shelter. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, along with Finland's recent decision to join
NATO, makes such preparations seem especially prescient, even as citizens hold out hope that these bunkers will never truly be needed.

ISRAEL

From its creation in 1948, Israel has felt isolated and under threat from its enemies. This collective siege mentality manifests itself with over one million public and private bomb shelters, found throughout Israel and the Occupied Territories.

According to the 1951 civil defense law, all homes, residential buildings and industrial buildings in Israel are required to have bomb shelters. However, several homes or residential buildings may make use of a single shelter jointly.

Prior to the Lebanon War, PLO attacks from Lebanon led to thousands of Israelis spending large amounts of time in bomb shelters.

In October 2010, the Home Front Command initiated a publicity campaign to explain to the public what the specified time people have to enter public bomb shelters after hearing the warning siren.

Communities near the Gaza Strip, which have been targeted by constant rocket attacks since 2001, have additional fortifications. In March 2008 the government placed 120 fortified bus stops in Sderot, following a Defense Ministry assessment that most rocket-related injuries and fatalities were caused by shrapnel wounds in victims on the street. As of January 2009, all schools in Sderot have been fortified against rockets; fortifications consist of arched canopies over roofs. However, on 3 January 2009 a Grad rocket penetrated the fortification of a school in Ashkelon.

In March 2009, Sderot inaugurated a reinforced children's recreation center built by the Jewish National Fund. The purpose of the center, which has "$1.5 million worth of reinforced steel", is to provide a rocket-proof place for children to play. Sderot also has a "missile-protected playground," with concrete tunnels painted to look like caterpillars.

During the 1991 Gulf War, Israel feared that Iraq would attack the country with missiles carrying chemical weapons and prepared accordingly. Four million gas masks were distributed to citizens across the country, as well as to residents of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and chemical-proof sealed rooms were prepared in homes. No chemical weapons were actually launched by Iraq, but Iraq did fire 39 conventional Scud missiles on Israel during the course of the war, hitting neighborhoods around Tel Aviv and elsewhere and causing extensive property damage. As soon as the first missile fell, Israel declared a chemical-weapons civil defense alert. Upon missile attacks, air-raid sirens sounded nationwide and civil defense authorities instructed the public, via radio, to don gas masks and close themselves in sealed rooms.

In early 1998, during an escalation in the Iraq disarmament crisis, a media-stirred panic of Iraqi chemical attack ensued in Israel, with thousands lining up at gas mask distribution centers. Officials downplayed the dangers but began preparations nonetheless.

Prior to the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, Israel instructed its citizens to ready their sealed rooms again and to carry gas masks at all times, though it assessed the likelihood of chemical attack as low.

MISSILE INTERCEPTION SYSTEMS

ARROW

The Arrow "Interceptor" (Hebrew: טיל חץ [ˈtil ˈxɛts]) ABM is a theater missile defense (TMD) system; it is the first missile developed by Israel and United States that was specifically designed and built to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles on a national level.

On July 29, 2004, Israel and the United States carried out a joint test flight in the USA in which the Arrow was launched against a real Scud missile. The test was a success, with the Arrow destroying the Scud with a direct hit. In December 2005 the system was successfully tested again in a firing against a replicated Scud C as Shahab-3 missile. This test success was repeated on February 11, 2007.

DAVID'S SLING

David's Sling (Hebrew: קלע דוד), also sometimes called Magic Wand (Hebrew: שרביט קסמים), is an Israel Defense Forces military system being jointly developed by the Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and the American defense contractor Raytheon, designed to intercept medium- to long-range rockets.

IRON DOME

Iron Dome (Hebrew: כיפת ברזל) is a mobile system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. designed to intercept short-range rockets with a range less than 70 km.

Rafael states that the system is an effective solution to short range rockets (such as Qassam rockets) and 155mm shells, capable of operating both during the day and at night, under various weather conditions, and able to confront multiple simultaneous threats. It was proved to be about 80% successful in downing rockets during the 2012 Gaza war.

UNITED KINGDOM

The UK has no nuclear bomb proof shelters or early warning sirens. Presumably, the British government and their elected politicians consider their citizens expendable - as in the days of Empire slavery. See the build your own bomb shelter survival guide.

  Cold War

ANTI FIRST STRIKE COUNTERMEASURES

According to the theories of nuclear deterrence and mutual assured destruction, full countervalue retaliation would be the likely fate for any state that unleashed a first strike. To maintain credible deterrence, nuclear-weapons states have taken measures to give their enemies reason to believe that a first strike would lead to unacceptable results.

The main strategy relies on creating doubt among enemy strategists regarding nuclear capacity, weapons characteristics, facility and infrastructure vulnerability, early warning systems, intelligence penetration, strategic plans, and political will. In terms of military capabilities, the aim is to create the impression of the maximum possible force and survivability, which leads the enemy to make increased estimates of the probability of a disabling counterstrike, and in terms of strategy and politics, the aim is to cause the enemy to believe that such a second strike would be forthcoming in the event of a nuclear attack.

What is for sure, is that if there is not a serious threat, possibly a very near miss involving the destruction of the player's nations and their leaders, that World War Three is par for the course, just as a horse needs a cart and a cart needs a horse. Or, death and taxes.
