In a perfect world, and in the film world, casting correctly is vital for profitability, then again in the realm of historical biopics, some effort should be made to educate viewers who are fresh to the subject, with a goodly degree of authenticity. Where the precise genealogy of Cleopatra is not known, there is some flexibility. Presumably why Elizabeth Taylor became so widely accepted as the iconic Queen of the Nile. And then there is makeup, and costumes.

Zendaya, the Emmy-winning star of Euphoria and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is set to play the legendary Egyptian queen Cleopatra in a new biopic directed by Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Dune and Arrival1. The screenplay for Cleopatra is based on the best-selling book by Stacy Schiff and will explore Cleopatra’s ruthless rise to power using her skills as a seductress, a strategist, and a survivor.

The film, which is based on the best-selling book by Stacy Schiff, will explore Cleopatra’s ruthless rise to power using her skills as a seductress, a strategist, and a survivor.

According to a tweet by insider Daniel Richtman, Timothée Chalamet, who co-starred with Zendaya in Dune, was offered the role of Octavius, the Roman general who became Cleopatra’s enemy after the death of Julius Caesar. Daniel Craig, the current James Bond, is being sought to play Caesar, Cleopatra’s lover and ally. The film is expected to begin production in late 2024.

Cleopatra has been a popular subject for Hollywood adaptations, most famously portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 epic that nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox.

Gal Gadot is in the running with her own film of Cleopatra, script, the works. But, she too suffered from criticism. We think both actresses are wonderfully talented and have been brilliant in other productions. No matter what the media and public are saying. Anyone playing the part of the Queen of the Nile, is going to come in for some criticism, as will any movie, when the critics get their hands on it.

THE DAILY STAR 11 NOVEMBER 2023 - ZENDAYA'S CASTING AS 'CLEOPATRA' SPARKS CONTROVERSY

Sony Pictures is planning a biopic on "Cleopatra", the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. However, controversy emerged around the rumoured casting of the film.

According to sources, Denis Villeneuve's next project will be based on the biography "Cleopatra: A Life" by Stacy Schiff. The Canadian director will start working on it following the release of "Dune: Part II".

Zendaya, famous for her role in "Spider-Man: No Way Home", is set to portray the iconic queen on the silver screen. The actress has officially accepted the role. Timothee Chalamet is being considered for Octavius, and Daniel Craig is in talks for the role of Caesar.

The Internet however has erupted with mixed reactions. Social media is buzzing with support and criticism for Zendaya being cast as the queen. While some are thrilled to see her ascend to the throne, others are voicing concerns about Hollywood's casting decisions, urging for more accuracy in portraying titular roles.

"Why does Hollywood insist on casting anyone but Greek actors for Cleopatra movies?" questioned a user on social media.

Another X user in the comments emphasised, "Cleopatra was Greek."

A user highlighted that the actress "bears no resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor," known for her role in the 1963 epic.

"Cleopatra was Greek, not African. How about a 'Shaka Zulu' movie with a blonde-haired White actor playing him? Let's avoid misrepresenting historical figures," expressed another user.

However, it's worth noting that not all casting decisions have faced criticism.

An X user expressed genuine excitement about Daniel Craig portraying Caesar, stating, "I can envision Daniel Craig in the uniform with the Caesar cut, and it's practically perfect..."

Another user chimed in, agreeing that it's a "great casting choice for Caesar."

MARCA 9 NOVEMBER 2023 - ZENDAYA & DANIEL CRAIG TO STAR IN DENIS VILLENEUVER'S EPIC BIOPIC "CLEOPATRA"

Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed director behind films like "Blade Runner 2049" and "Arrival," has some exciting projects lined up for the future. According to recent reports, his next film after "Dune: Part II" will be a historical drama centered around the life of Cleopatra. This news confirms earlier rumors and adds to the anticipation surrounding Villeneuve's upcoming works.

The screenplay for "Cleopatra" is said to be written by David Scarpa, known for his work on "Napoleon." The film will be based on the best-selling book by Stacey Schiff, delving into Cleopatra's ruthless rise to power and her adept use of seduction. It's important to note that this new adaptation is expected to take a different approach than the iconic 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor.

What makes this project even more intriguing is the casting choices. It has been revealed that Zendaya, the talented actress known for her roles in "Euphoria" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home," has accepted the offer to portray the young queen of Egypt.

Additionally, Timothée Chalamet, who has gained critical acclaim for his performances in films like "Call Me by Your Name" and "Little Women," has been offered the role of Octavius. The filmmakers are also reportedly seeking Daniel Craig to play Caesar, adding another layer of star power to the production.

Production will start in 2024

Villeneuve himself expressed his excitement about the project in an interview last year, stating: "I also have a historical film project on the life of Cleopatra. This project is underway and it excites me a lot." With his track record of delivering visually stunning and thought-provoking films, fans can expect Villeneuve to bring a fresh perspective to this iconic figure from history.

It's worth mentioning that there has already been a famous Cleopatra movie released in 1963, starring Elizabeth Taylor. While it received mixed reviews, it was a commercial success and provided an intriguing look at Ancient Egypt during Cleopatra's reign. However, Scarpa has indicated that this new adaptation will take a different approach, describing it as a "political thriller" with a hard R rating.

He promises a lean and mean two-hour film filled with political intrigue, assassinations, and all the gritty elements that make a thrilling thriller. As production is set to begin in 2024, fans of Villeneuve and historical dramas alike can eagerly anticipate the release of "Cleopatra." With an incredible cast and a director known for his meticulous attention to detail, this film has all the makings of a captivating and unforgettable cinematic experience.

Q. Cleopatra Reborn is a Sci-Fi or Cli-Fi about the discovery of Cleopatra's long lost mummy. One of the John Storm adventures, where scientists reincarnate the former Egyptian Queen from her DNA. We wondered how such a reworking of the theme might include some of the biopic and epic elements of Villeneuve's proposed venture with Sony Pictures? Somewhat, like comparing one of the monochrome movies of the Titanic sinking, with the Leonardo di Caprio version. To make an otherwise historical docu-drama a bit more interesting to a modern audience?

We are of the view that any production that explores the workings of the political and historic machinations that led to Cleopatra taking her own life, will be a worthwhile enterprise. We have a collection of just about all the films made about the most famous woman in history. Every single one is interesting from the point of view of how the directors and producers tackled the subject. We have advanced so much with movie making technology, that a modern production is sure to improve on what has gone before, eventually. The same can be said of the latest Titanic and King Kong movies, compared to their monochrome beginnings.

It is about time for a Cleopatra remake, the fact there are two offerings in the works, signals that Hollywood is waking up to the simmering needs of the viewing public. Let us hope there is room for one more. A modern take on the subject will help the historic versions and vice versa. Giving movie lovers a choice, and collectors more to embrace.

A. John Storm Adventures: Cleopatra Reborn sounds like an intriguing blend of science fiction and historical elements. While Denis Villeneuve’s biopic aims for a more authentic portrayal of Cleopatra’s life, a sci-fi twist could indeed add excitement and appeal to modern audiences. Here are some ways the two approaches might intersect:

1. Genetic Resurrection: In Cleopatra Reborn, scientists resurrect Cleopatra from her DNA. This concept could parallel the biopic’s exploration of Cleopatra’s rise to power, emphasizing her unique genetic lineage and the mystery surrounding her identity.

2. Epic Moments: Just as the Titanic story was reimagined with epic visuals and emotional depth in the Leonardo DiCaprio version, Cleopatra Reborn could infuse grandeur into key historical events. Imagine Cleopatra’s dramatic encounters with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony rendered with futuristic technology and awe-inspiring visuals.

3. Political Intrigue: Both narratives could delve into political intrigue. While the biopic focuses on historical accuracy, the sci-fi version might introduce futuristic power struggles, secret societies, or hidden agendas. Cleopatra’s cunning and strategic brilliance could shine in unexpected ways.

4. Parallel Timelines: Perhaps the film could alternate between ancient Egypt and a futuristic setting, drawing parallels between Cleopatra’s challenges and those faced by the scientists resurrecting her. This dual timeline could create suspense and thematic depth.

5. Emotional Journeys: Cleopatra’s personal journey—her loves, losses, and ambitions—remains central. Whether through historical accuracy or sci-fi twists, her character arc should resonate emotionally with viewers.

Ultimately, blending historical drama with sci-fi elements offers a fresh take on Cleopatra’s story, appealing to both history enthusiasts and fans of imaginative storytelling.

Cleopatra Reborn is an intriguing concept that seamlessly blends elements of science fiction (Sci-Fi)

Cleopatra Reborn is an intriguing concept that seamlessly blends elements of science fiction (Sci-Fi), climate fiction (Cli-Fi), and historical drama. The premise of resurrecting Cleopatra from her DNA is inherently Sci-Fi, while the potential environmental implications or discoveries related to ancient Egypt could lean into Cli-Fi territory.

Comparing to Villeneuve's Proposed Venture

Denis Villeneuve's proposed Cleopatra biopic, if realized, would likely focus on the historical and biographical aspects of the queen. However, by introducing the Sci-Fi element of cloning or reincarnation, Cleopatra Reborn can offer a unique perspective. It's akin to comparing the classic, black-and-white Titanic to the visually stunning, modern blockbuster version.

To appeal to a modern audience, you could incorporate:

- Spectacular Visuals: Given the Sci-Fi and Cli-Fi elements, there's ample opportunity for stunning visuals. Imagine recreating ancient Egypt with modern CGI, or depicting futuristic laboratories where the cloning process takes place.

- Complex Characters: Explore the psychological implications of being brought back to life after millennia. How would Cleopatra react to the modern world?

- Ethical Dilemmas: Delve into the ethical questions surrounding cloning and reincarnation. What are the rights of a cloned individual?

- Environmental Themes: Tie in the story with contemporary issues like climate change. Perhaps the discovery of Cleopatra's tomb reveals clues about ancient Egypt's environmental practices, or the cloning process itself has environmental consequences.

- Action and Adventure: While historical accuracy is important, don't shy away from action sequences. Cleopatra could find herself in thrilling adventures, both in her past life and the present.

By combining these elements, you can create a compelling narrative that appeals to a wide audience while respecting the historical figure of Cleopatra. It's a chance to reimagine a well-known story through a fresh and exciting lens.

A Potential Narrative

Imagine a world where advancements in genetic engineering have made it possible to resurrect historical figures. A team of scientists, driven by a mix of scientific curiosity and personal ambition, decide to clone Cleopatra.

The story could follow the challenges of creating a viable clone, the ethical debates that ensue, and the psychological impact of being brought back to life in a world millennia removed from one's original existence.

Cleopatra, reborn, could become a symbol of both the past and the future, a bridge between ancient civilizations and modern society. Her story could be a cautionary tale about the dangers of tampering with history or a celebration of the human spirit's resilience.
