There
can be little doubt that the cooperation between Russia and China, in
the creation of a new world order, means that the West is at war, even
though leaders are playing this down, and not calling a Spade a Spade.
Having infiltrated and absorbed the West, via cheap goods and financing,
China is probably the biggest danger, as they appear to be playing
Russia as they are playing the rest of the world, with trade. All the
while smiling and saying the right things. But actually, with the
intention of a hostile takeover of the planet - in stealth fashion. Does
that make Putin the biggest dummy in the New World Order. With Russia
soon to be absorbed in a new Chinese World Order - along with the rest
of the world?
THE i 16 MAY 2024 - PUTIN AND XI'S NEW WORLD ORDER IS EMERGING - IT COULD BE CATASTROPHIC
Ahead of this week’s visit to China, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised his Chinese counterpart and powerful political partner,
Xi
Jinping, for sharing his vision of a “multipolar world order”.
It is a term he has often used to point to failures of the US-led world order, and to rally support from China and “global south” middle powers such as Brazil and Argentina for geopolitical supremacy.
The notion of a new world order emerging is a not a far-fetched idea, with a fractured
Europe and potential for a second Trump presidency threatening to erode the institutions and norms that have governed much of the global economy since the early 20th century.
“The thinking within Russia is that America will go back to isolationism of the late 19th century, early 20th century. This has always been what the Soviet Union wanted, and what Russia has always advocated, that the European continent should be America-less,” Dr Stephen Hall, lecturer in Russian and post-Soviet politics at the University of Bath, told i.
“It would be catastrophic and, if anything, it would lead to even more anarchy within the global order.”
Sitting alongside Russia and watching the West get tangled in global issues is China, which is pursuing its own ideal of a multipolar world order.
President Putin travelled to China on Thursday for a two-day visit that will include face-to-face talks with Xi on matters of global and regional security, according to the Kremlin. The trip comes barely a week after Xi visited Europe for the first time in five years.
It is their first bilateral summit since Xi’s trip to the Kremlin in March 2023, when the two leaders referred to each other as dear friends and promised economic co-operation.
Beijing has refrained from directly intervening in Russia’s war in Ukraine and
Israel’s assault on Gaza beyond calls for restraint and peace, displaying a kind of diplomacy that is attractive to the global south, which increasingly sees the West as losing its moral authority.
“Xi is seeking to transform the liberal international order from within with the support of countries in the global south and he calls it the ‘democratisation’ of the international system,” Steve Tsang, director of the Soas
China Institute in
London, told i.
“But to get there it is helpful to see the liberal international order failing, so the case for change and transformation become self-evident. In this context, Putin’s challenges to the liberal international order is very welcome to Xi and to
Beijing.”
China has proved agile with providing the global south with economic incentives, and generally does not talk about democracy and human rights as a precursor for giving foreign aid.
Beijing also plays an important role in Brics, the intergovernmental organisation of emerging economies comprised of Brazil,
Russia,
India, China and
South
Africa, which has established a bank to offer financial support to developing nations, particularly those that have suffered severe setbacks as a result of the war in Ukraine and
Covid-19 pandemic. The group has expanded to include
Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the
United Arab
Emirates.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which was initially set up with Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan for mutual security, political, and economic co-operation, has widened its sphere of influence with India,
Iran and
Pakistan as member states.
HAVE NO DOUBT: WE ARE AT WAR WITH RUSSIA
Membership of these groups does not depend on liberal values and include both autocratic and democratic governments.
“The popularity of SCO and Brics shows how lots of countries, despite significant ideological differences, are attracted to the kind of diplomacy propagated by Beijing: à la carte, based on self-interest, and without Western interference,” says Ties Dams, a China expert at the Clingendael Institute, a Dutch think-tank.
President Putin may stand to benefit from a return of Donald Trump to the White House, after the presumptive Republican nominee made disparaging comments about
Nato, saying Russia could do “whatever the hell they want” to member states that do not meet their financial obligations to the alliance.
However, Mr Putin does not need to resort to conflict to exploit weaknesses between Western nations. For years, Russia has increasingly turned to election interfering,
cyber
attacks, spies and proxies in parts of the world to undermine the governability of some states.
“Putin doesn’t need to antagonise Nato, he just needs to show the Article 5 is only on paper,” said Dr Hall, referring to a guarantee in the North
Atlantic Treaty that states that an attack on one member of the alliance “shall be considered an attack against them all”.
Officials have warned that steps from the European continent to move away from an
over-reliance on the US are long overdue. In April French President Emmanuel Macron urged that Europe needed more stronger and integrated defences and must not become a vassal of the US.
“There is a risk our Europe could die. We are not equipped to face the risks,” he said.
Even if Mr Trump does not become the next US
president, the Republican party “is not going to be de-Trumpified quickly”, said Dr Hall.
“Europe has to be prepared for what comes next,” he added.
“The international order that we know is certainly being fractured, and it’s hard to say whether it can survive.
“If the reasoning is that America is a fair-weather ally and may not come to Europe’s aid, Europe needs to make sure that it has the capacity to defend itself.”
